At Saint Augustine’s it is our intention to develop curious, active, lifelong learners who have a thirst for learning, who through our carefully planned and high quality Science education are prepared for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world through fostering concern about, and active care for, our environment by becoming stewards of God’s creation and living in a more sustainable way.  

We believe that a broad and balanced Science curriculum is the entitlement of all children and will reflect the equality and diversity practised in school. It enables children to acquire a growing understanding of scientific ideas and key concepts through building upon previous scientific knowledge, working scientifically and by working collaboratively. We aim to promote the love of Science, and inspire our pupils to consider a future career in Science.

At Saint Augustine’s children begin their Science learning in Foundation Stage through the ‘Understanding the World’ (specifically The Natural World) area of learning. They then continue this journey through the school where we use the ‘White Rose Science’ scheme (for Years 1 to 6), which includes all the Science National Curriculum expectations in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The scheme provides a coherent sequence of lessons, ensuring continuity and progression from year to year. Each topic builds on prior knowledge, allowing students to deepen their understanding as they move through the school. The scheme includes comprehensive resources and detailed lesson plans, enabling our teachers to deliver high-quality Science lessons with confidence. Differentiation is embedded in the plans, ensuring that all children can access the curriculum and succeed. The scheme also integrates core investigation types and hands-on practical ideas directly into lessons. Through our Science curriculum, students will gain a deeper understanding of environmental issues and the importance of sustainability. We also regularly participate in Science Week.

Children will be immersed in key scientific vocabulary to support their scientific learning and will also develop their mathematical, literacy and computing skills. Visits and visitors enhance the curriculum further, for example, Safety Seymour visitor to Year 2 and Martineau Gardens trip in Year 1. We work closely with our school Eco-team and take part in Science Week yearly.

Mind-maps, teacher observations, questioning and written evidence inform future planning and help track progression.

The impact of our Science curriculum, as delivered through the White Rose Science Scheme is evident in several key areas. Our pupils will develop a strong understanding of scientific concepts and methods, equipping them with the knowledge they need to excel in their future education. Through enquiry-based learning and hands-on investigations, our students enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for success in Science and beyond. The practical, exploratory nature of our Science lessons keeps students engaged and excited about learning. This enthusiasm for Science is something we strive to nurture and sustain throughout their time at Saint Augustine’s. By linking Science with other subjects, where possible, we provide a more holistic educational experience that helps students make connections across different areas of learning. Children will gain meaningful, memorable learning experiences that will last a lifetime and be independent, happy and curious lifelong learners who have a positive sense of themselves and the world around them. By the end of their time at Saint Augustine’s, children will have developed a strong scientific foundation, preparing them for further education and life beyond school.
